Michigan Man Charged After Posing As Utility Workers, Allegedly Killing One

A Michigan man has been charged with felony murder, unlawful imprisonment, and home invasion after he and another man allegedly impersonated utility workers before killing a 72-year-old man and tying up his wife in their home.

The victim, identified as Hussein Murray, was found dead in the basement of his Rochester Hills home on Friday, October 14, 2024, with duct tape around his wrists and ankles. His wife was found bound and gagged upstairs.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the suspects, Carlos Jose Hernandez and an unidentified accomplice, first visited the Murray home on Thursday, October 13, posing as DTE Energy workers investigating a gas leak. The Murrays turned them away, but the suspects returned the next day and convinced Murray to let them into the basement.

  • The suspects then allegedly duct-taped Murray's wrists and ankles and hit his wife in the face before ransacking the home and taking her phone and watch.
  • Murray's wife was able to call 911 after the suspects left, and police found Murray's body in the basement.
  • The Oakland County Medical Examiner ruled Murray's death a homicide on Saturday, October 15, 2024.

Hernandez was arrested in Louisiana on Saturday afternoon and is currently being held in the Caddo Correctional Center. He is expected to be extradited back to Michigan to face charges.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is continuing to search for the second suspect and is asking for the public's help in identifying him.
