Buck Returns to Baseball Booth
Joe Buck will return to the baseball broadcast booth for the first time in three years when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs on May 24. Buck's father, Jack, and Caray's grandfather, Harry, were legendary announcers who called Cardinals games on KMOX Radio from 1954-59 and 1961-69. The two announcers will be working together for the first time, and Buck says he is excited to be a part of the Cardinals' broadcast team.
- Buck has not called a baseball game since Game 6 of the 2021 World Series.
- Buck and NFL broadcast partner Troy Aikman signed with ESPN to work Monday Night Football in 2022.
- Buck had been Fox's No. 1 baseball announcer for 26 years, calling 24 World Series.
Sentimental Value for Cardinals Fans
The pairing of Buck and Caray will be a special one for Cardinals fans, as it will mark the first time that two members of the same family have called a Cardinals game together since Buck's father and Caray's grandfather did so in the 1950s and 1960s. Buck says he is looking forward to the opportunity to call a game with Caray, and he knows that Cardinals fans will enjoy listening to the two of them work together.
- Buck began broadcasting games with the Cardinals in 1991.
- Buck announced before the 2008 season that he would no longer work local broadcasts.
- ESPN offered Buck the chance to serve as a fill-in announcer for baseball games, but he declined.
Focus on the Game
Buck and Caray say that the focus of the broadcast will be on the game, and they will not be spending a lot of time talking about their families. However, they know that Cardinals fans will be interested in hearing about the family connection, and they will be happy to share some stories about their fathers and grandfathers.
- Buck says that he is "more like the guest" and that he is "just sitting in with the band for the night."
- "The game comes first," Caray said. "This will not be about Chip or Joe."
- "But I'm sure we'll be talking about his father and my grandfather."
